Red lava rock is crushed volcanic stone full of tiny air pockets, which makes it light and easy to spread. It goes down like mulch but doesn't rot, break down, or need replacing every year. Use it in shrub beds, around cactus and succulents, and along borders where you want warm color with less upkeep. Pieces run about 3/4 to 1 1/2 inch. Size varies slightly and shade varies by location.

Use the calculator with your length, width, and depth. A 2 to 3 inch layer gives full coverage. One cubic yard covers about 105 square feet at 3 inches deep.
Lava rock weighs about a third as much as most gravel. Selling it by volume means you pay for coverage, not weight.
Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down, and you refresh it every year or two. Lava rock doesn't break down, so you put it down once. Pick mulch for beds you dig often. Pick lava rock for shrub beds and borders you want to leave alone.
It's heavier than mulch and the rough edges grip each other, so it stays put in normal wind and rain. On steep slopes or right under downspouts, use edging to hold it in.
It's rough and porous, so wear gloves when you spread it. It's not a good fit for bare-foot areas, play areas, or dog runs.
By dump truck, straight to your property. The driver dumps it in one pile where you choose. Pick a firm, level spot the truck can reach, clear of cars and overhead wires. Delivery is included in the price you see.
