Dark (aged) fir is Douglas fir bark dust screened to 3/4" minus and aged until it settles into a deep, natural brown. It does everything the classic red fir does — holds moisture, suits acid-loving plants, spreads smooth at about 2" — but with a mellower tone that blends into established landscapes instead of announcing itself.
