Large 1 1/2–2 1/2" crushed limestone for heavy base
#4 limestone is crushed limestone in big pieces, about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches, with the fines screened out. The large angular stones lock into a heavy-duty layer that bridges soft or wet ground, and the wide gaps move a lot of water. Use it for driveway and pad base over soft soil, construction entrances, drainage trenches, and around culverts. It's always limestone, so we only offer it where limestone is quarried nearby. Size varies slightly and color varies by location.
#4 limestone is large, angular limestone about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches, guaranteed limestone rather than #4 crushed stone that can be any rock the quarry runs.

It's a standard size number used by quarries and road departments. #4 stone runs from about 2 inches down to about 1 inch, much larger than #57. Exact sizing varies slightly by quarry.
