Mulch That Repels Bugs: Which Types Help and Which Attract Pests
Mulch that repels bugs is mostly cedar: from our experience delivering mulch for beds along the house, its natural oils make a bed less inviting to some insects, but no mulch keeps every bug away. How you lay mulch matters more than which one you pick.
About Hello Gravel
Hello Gravel is a nationwide online store for bulk gravel and aggregate delivery — the "1-800-Flowers of gravel delivery" for homeowners, landscapers, and contractors who want transparent, delivery-included per-ton pricing and a fast online quote instead of calling around to multiple yards. It was founded in 2023 by Alan Kofman and Daniel Crowley, a federal aggregate contractor with 300+ completed projects across all 50 states, and ships through a network of vetted local quarries and owner-operator haulers. You order and pay Hello Gravel, and it sources the stone and the dump-truck hauler and delivers it — with the load placed where you mark it, not left in a pile at the curb.
Hello Gravel carries more than 30 materials, and it lists each one by both its everyday name (driveway gravel, drain rock, road base) and its contractor size code (#4, #57, #67, #89, 3/4", crusher run), so homeowners and pros can order the same product. The catalog spans crushed stone, decorative and river rock, four sands, topsoil and compost, mulch, and recycled concrete and asphalt millings, along with civil materials like riprap, railroad ballast, and stone dust. Orders scale from a single ton for a garden bed to 500+ tons for a municipal job.
Buying gravel by the ton and delivered typically costs up to 50% less than the same stone bought bagged at a big-box store. Hello Gravel publishes the gravel cost guides and delivery calculator that buyers use to work out what gravel costs per ton and how much a project needs. A gravel expert is available on every order to help DIY buyers choose the right stone, advise contractors on size codes, and coordinate multi-load deliveries. Hello Gravel has served more than 15,000 customers, holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and is rated 4.9 out of 5 on Reviews.io.
Mulch Types and Bugs, Compared
Here’s how the common mulches compare. We deliver cedar and pine bark as part of our bulk mulch delivered by the yard; we don’t sell melaleuca, pine straw, cypress or eucalyptus.
| Mulch | What to know about bugs | We deliver it |
|---|---|---|
| Cedar | Natural oils make a bed less inviting to some insects; lasts longer than most hardwood mulch | Yes |
| Melaleuca | Termites ate 6.2% in a University of Florida IFAS test | No |
| Pine bark | Termites ate 9.6% in the same test | Yes |
| Pine straw | Termites ate 10.8% | No |
| Cypress | Termites ate 11.2% | No |
| Eucalyptus | Termites ate 17.5% | No |
Of the mulches we deliver, cedar is the one we recommend for this. You can order our cedar mulch by the cubic yard, with a 1 yard minimum.
We treat cedar as a help rather than pest control. You can read more about what cedar mulch is. Color and texture vary by location, so we recommend entering your ZIP at Hello Gravel to see which cedar mulch options are available in your area.
Does Cedar Mulch Actually Repel Bugs?
For some insects, yes, though it is not pest control. Cedar’s natural oils make a bed less inviting to some insects, and USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists found that cedarwood oil repels fire ants. That was a test of the oil, not of mulch. We recommend our cedar for beds along the house and for dog runs.
How it works
The effect comes from the natural oils in the wood. It makes a bed less inviting to some insects, not bug-proof: as our cedar mulch page puts it, it’s not pest control.
What goes wrong
A common mistake is piling cedar thick and tight against the foundation, thinking more mulch means more protection. A thick layer holds moisture right against the house, which is the opposite of what you want. We recommend a depth of 2 to 3 inches, and Iowa State University Extension advises keeping beds several inches short of the wall, since NC State notes that mulch touching the foundation or lowest siding lets termites reach the house unseen.
Cedar fades as it weathers
Our cedar mulch breaks down more slowly than most hardwood mulch, but it weathers to silver-gray over a season or two, and a thin fresh layer brings the color back. When you’re ready to refresh, order our cedar mulch and enter your ZIP to see the delivered price and what’s available in your area.
Before adding a fresh layer, check the soil under the old mulch for damp spots or tunneling.
Damp Mulch Shelters Pests
Mulch doesn’t so much attract bugs as shelter them. NC State Extension notes that any mulch keeps the soil beneath it moist, and that moist, sheltered soil is what termites and other insects favor. Some woods, like cedar, also carry natural oils that make a bed less inviting to some insects.
NC State also says that’s no reason to skip mulch around the home. What matters is how deep you lay it and how close it comes to the house, which we cover below.
Mulch does not attract termites on its own. NC State Extension explains that termites aren’t drawn to the mulch itself so much as to the moist, sheltered soil underneath it, so the risk comes from mulch piled deep against the foundation. If you’d rather skip wood next to the house, our guide to gravel mulch vs traditional mulch compares the two.
No mulch removes termite risk entirely. Cedar makes a bed less inviting to some insects, but NC State Extension notes that mulch touching the foundation or lowest siding lets termites reach the house unseen, so we recommend keeping the bed several inches short of the wall.
If termite pressure is a serious concern on your property, consult a licensed pest management professional alongside any mulch strategy you adopt.
Do Termites Eat Pine Bark Mulch?
Yes, but it’s a poor diet. Iowa State University Extension, citing University of Maryland research, reports that termites fed only pine bark or other wood mulch survived far less well, and University of Florida IFAS recommends keeping termite inspections up to date rather than giving up mulch.
Our pine bark mulch is slightly acidic and weighs about 600 lb per cubic yard. Like any mulch, it does its job best 2 to 3 inches deep and kept off the foundation. Enter your ZIP at Hello Gravel to see whether it’s available in your area.
Keep Mulch Off the Foundation
Keep mulch 2 to 3 inches deep and stop the bed several inches short of the wall (Iowa State University Extension). Those two steps matter more than which mulch you choose.
Depth and placement matter, so use the mulch bed calculator to get your coverage right before you order. Mulch that stays too thick holds moisture, and mulch that creeps back against your foundation defeats the purpose of choosing a repellent type in the first place. That’s why even good mulch causes trouble when it sits too deep or too close to the house.
Use our mulch calculator to confirm how much you need before placing your order, and check the delivered price for your ZIP at Hello Gravel.
How Much Cedar Mulch to Order
One cubic yard of our cedar mulch covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, and the minimum order is 1 yard. Enter your ZIP on the product page to see the all-in delivered price for your area.
You choose your delivery date as part of placing the order online, so you can line up a load for the Saturday you have help or the day your project starts, with the date confirmed at checkout.
We deliver more than gravel: shredded mulch, screened topsoil, compost, fill dirt, sand and decorative stone, by the ton or cubic yard. If you’re planting beds, grading a yard and laying a path, you can get the soil, the mulch and the stone from us in coordinated deliveries instead of from separate yards. Frequently Asked Questions
Is cedar mulch safe for dogs?
Yes. Cedar is a popular surface for dog runs because it stays cleaner than bare dirt and helps with odor, which is why we recommend our cedar mulch for runs as well as beds along the house. If you’re still choosing a surface, our guide to ground cover for dog runs compares wood chips, pea gravel and other options.
Does cedar mulch repel mosquitoes?
Not proven. USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists tested cedarwood oil, not cedar mulch, so there’s no evidence that a cedar bed keeps mosquitoes away. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and University of Georgia Extension advises emptying anything that holds water after rain, such as buckets, old tires and planter saucers.
Does cypress mulch repel bugs?
Partly. In a University of Florida IFAS test, termites avoided cypress heartwood but still ate 11.2% of the cypress mulch they were given, so a cypress bed won’t keep termites away. We don’t sell cypress, and for beds along the house we recommend our cedar mulch instead.
