Graded Rip Rap

Graded Rip Rap is a durable, coarse aggregate composed of large, angular stones that have been carefully sorted by size to ensure consistency. This material is typically produced by quarrying and mechanically breaking down larger rocks, then screening them to achieve a uniform gradation. The grading process ensures that each load contains a balanced mix of stone sizes, which helps interlock the pieces for enhanced stability.

The graded attribute is crucial for performance, as it allows the stones to fit tightly together, reducing movement and providing superior erosion control. This makes graded rip rap ideal for protecting shorelines, riverbanks, culvert inlets and outlets, and slopes from water or wind erosion. It is also commonly used in commercial and residential projects for retaining walls, embankment stabilization, and as a base for heavy-duty access roads. The main advantage of graded rip rap is its excellent resistance to displacement and washout, though its large, uneven surface can make it less suitable for areas requiring a smooth finish or easy pedestrian access.
