Why Porter Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Porter is a small but growing community of 2,900 residents, expanding at about 0.40% annually. With 228 sunny days a year, an annual rainfall of 33.50 inches, and a USDA hardiness zone of 8b, local homeowners face a climate that combines strong sun with occasional heavy rains—conditions that shape how yards, driveways, and foundations perform. That steady, modest growth creates ongoing demand for reliable site work: new plantings and patios, driveway grading, garage and foundation backfill, and regrading after construction. For these projects, homeowners look for quality aggregates that compact reliably, drain properly, and avoid organic material that leads to future settling. Clean, well-graded fill-dirt from local sources reduces callbacks and helps projects last longer in Porter's climate.Popular Projects in Porter This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Porter Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Porter.
Fill-dirt is a locally sourced, natural earth material used to raise or level ground; it typically contains a mix of sand, silt, and clay with occasional small rock or gravel. In Porter and West Oklahoma it often reflects local soils (sometimes higher clay content), so color and texture can vary. Fill-dirt is intended for mass grading and backfill rather than final surfaces or planting topsoil.
Prices vary by supplier, screening, and delivery distance; check your zip code on Hello Gravel or request a local quote for current per-ton pricing. Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons, offers standard delivery in 2+ business days, and a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee; rural Porter deliveries can sometimes require additional lead time.
Hello Gravel connects you with trusted local suppliers and haulers who source material from the Porter/West Oklahoma area; supplier options shown at checkout reflect who serves your zip code. Minimum delivery amounts commonly start at Hello Gravel's 3-ton minimum, though some rural or private suppliers may require larger minimums—confirm on checkout or with customer service before ordering.
Deliveries to Porter are commonly made with tri-axle dump trucks; a typical tri-axle carries roughly 10–12 cubic yards, which translates to about 12–15 tons of fill-dirt depending on moisture and density. Smaller local straight dumps or larger end-dumps may be used in some areas; drivers will assess access and advise on placement at delivery.
Calculate cubic yards first: (Length ft x Width ft x Depth ft) / 27. To convert to tons, multiply cubic yards by about 1.3–1.5 (density varies by moisture and soil type); for example, a 12 ft by 100 ft area at 6 in (0.5 ft) deep = (12x100x0.5)/27 = 7.4 cubic yards, roughly 9.5–11 tons of fill-dirt.
Compact fill-dirt in thin lifts (4–8 inches loose) using a plate compactor for small areas or a vibratory roller for larger areas; aim for mechanical compaction to lower settlement risk. Number of passes depends on equipment and soil moisture, but a common approach is 4–6 passes per lift with a final proof roll; for structural pads or foundations, follow an engineer's specifications.
West Oklahoma weather—hot summers, heavy rains, and occasional freeze-thaw—can cause fill-dirt to settle, shrink when dry, or heave with freezing and thawing. Proper compaction, good drainage, and avoiding placing fill on overly wet ground reduce movement; expect some settling in the first year and plan for final grading after heavy weather cycles.
Request lab testing when you are filling for structural uses (building pads, foundations, or septic systems), if the fill looks very clayey, contains debris or organic material, or if project engineers require it. For simple grading or low-risk backfill, visual inspection and basic field tests may suffice, but a lab report provides reassurance for safety-critical projects.
Screened fill-dirt has fewer rocks, roots, and organics, compacts more uniformly, and is usually worth the extra cost under slabs, under decks, or where good compaction is required. Unscreened (unsorted) fill is fine for bulk mass grading or non-structural fills and is typically less expensive; choose screened material when you need a clean, stable base.
Fill-dirt is acceptable for raising grade and backfill but is not a substitute for a compacted aggregate base like crusher run when building a driveway surface or under asphalt. Crusher run or engineered fill provides better drainage and load-bearing capacity; use fill-dirt beneath those layers for mass elevation, but follow recommended aggregate thicknesses for finished surfaces.
Permit needs vary by city and county—check Porter city hall or your county building/zoning office before starting large grading, driveway approaches, or building pad work. Special considerations include driveway permits, septic setbacks, floodplain restrictions, and rights-of-way; confirming local rules early avoids delays or removal orders.
Fill-dirt itself can settle over months to a year; longevity depends on compaction, drainage, and traffic. Plan for routine maintenance: top-up low spots, regrade after heavy rains, and re-compact where necessary; for driveways, a stable aggregate base over fill-dirt will reduce maintenance needs significantly.
Mark your preferred dump location with stakes, clear obstacles, and make sure truck access is possible on firm ground to avoid ruts—deliveries on wet or soft lawns risk vehicle damage and extra fees. Request tailgate spreading at checkout if you want material distributed, and plan for a shovel or small equipment to move material into final position if the driver cannot spread.
