Decomposed Granite
Known for its natural look, this compact, durable material drains well and holds up in high-traffic areas. Made from crushed and weathered granite down to a mix of fine gravel and sand—best for patios, paths, driveways, and landscape projects. Can range in color from light brown and tan to reddish and gray, depending on the natural stone color in the region.
Road Base
(Class 5 | ABC | Crusher Run) A mixture of crushed limestone or granite, gravel, and sand, ranging from 1 ½” in size down to fines (small particles). Commonly used for constructing roads, driveway bases, parking lots, and other paved and unpaved surfaces. Intended to be compacted, hence the inclusion of fines within the material to provide support and be resistant to erosion and shifting.

Why Hays Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Hays is a community of 3,010 people experiencing steady expansion at a 2.80% annual growth rate. With about 228 sunny days per year, 34.00 inches of annual rainfall, and a hardiness zone of 8b, local homeowners balance bright, warm summers with enough precipitation to make drainage and erosion control important. As development spreads across a metro area of 2.3+ million, demand for reliable aggregates is rising for projects like driveways, walkways, French drains, and raised landscaping beds. Homeowners want consistent material that performs in mixed sun-and-rain conditions, clear pricing, and delivery that fits their schedule so projects move forward without surprises. Gravel is a practical choice for Hays because properly graded mixes shed water, stabilize surfaces, and tolerate seasonal settling better than finer materials. In this climate, angular crushed gravel helps parking and drive surfaces resist rutting, while rounded decorative gravel works well for sunny garden paths. Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers who source materials that reflect regional geology, offers transparent pricing, and schedules delivery (standard 2+ business days; next-day available for orders placed before noon CST) so you get the right gravel for the job with minimal hassle.Popular Projects in Hays This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Hays gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Hays.
Typical delivered gravel prices in Hays vary by type and distance; expect about $30 to $65 per ton ($40 to $85 per cubic yard using roughly 1.3 tons per cubic yard). Decorative pea gravel or color-treated stone will be toward the high end, while basic crushed stone or road base is at the low end. Remember Hello Gravel has a 3-ton minimum and delivery fees or next-day surcharges may apply.
For West North Carolina driveways we commonly recommend crushed stone (3/4" to 1") or 57 stone for a stable, compactable surface, and crusher run or road base as a compacted sublayer. Pea gravel can be used as a top dressing for appearance but does not compact as well on slopes or in heavy traffic. Choose angular, crushed materials on Hays' hilly or well-drained sites to help interlock and resist movement.
Estimate volume by area and depth: cubic yards = (square feet x depth in feet) / 27, and 1 cubic yard of gravel is roughly 1.3 tons. As a quick guide, a single-car driveway (10 x 30 ft): 3" depth ≈ 2.8 cu yd ≈ 3.6 tons; 4" depth ≈ 3.7 cu yd ≈ 4.8 tons. A double-car driveway (12 x 40 ft) at 4" is about 5.9 cu yd ≈ 7.7 tons; adjust for recommended depths of 3" resurfacing or 4"–6" for new construction.
Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers and contracted dump truck haulers that serve the Hays area and wider West North Carolina region. Availability, material types, and pricing vary by zip code, so enter your address on the site or contact our team to see local supplier options and delivery windows. Note that trucks are operated by partner haulers, and deliveries follow our standard timing (2+ business days standard, next-day for orders placed before noon CST with a fee).
Hays gets seasonal rain and occasional freeze-thaw conditions typical of West North Carolina; this increases the importance of proper base thickness and drainage. Angular crushed stone and a well-graded base help water pass through and reduce rutting, while good surface slope and edge drainage prevent puddling. Consider geotextile fabric under the base on soft soils to improve longevity.
Installed costs vary with site prep, access, and material choice, but a common range in West North Carolina is about $2 to $6 per square foot. For example, a 12 x 40 ft driveway often falls between about $1,000 and $5,000 depending on excavation, base depth, grading, and edging. Ask for a detailed quote that separates material, hauling, grading, and compaction so you can compare bids accurately.
Recycled or reclaimed aggregate is sometimes available from local suppliers in the Hays area, but supply and consistency vary. Reclaimed material can save money and be suitable for base layers, though it may contain more fines and less uniform color than virgin stone. Tell our team if you want recycled material and we’ll check local supplier availability and pricing.
A heavy-duty woven geotextile fabric is the most common underlayer used in Hays to separate soil from gravel and reduce weed growth and sinking. Homeowners also use plastic or metal edging, landscape staples, a garden rake or power rake for leveling, and a pre-emergent herbicide plus occasional spot weeding. Periodic top-ups of 1/2" to 1" every few years will keep the surface even, especially after heavy rain seasons.
Regulations and HOA covenants vary by neighborhood in Hays and surrounding West North Carolina towns; some HOAs restrict loose pea gravel or require specific edging and compaction. Always check your HOA rules and contact Hays town or county permitting offices if you are unsure about setbacks or drainage requirements. If in doubt, ask your HOA for written approval before installing or resurfacing a gravel driveway.
Ask the contractor what exact material (size and specification) they plan to use, recommended depth, compaction method, and how they will handle drainage and edging. Request a written breakdown of material, hauling, labor, permit costs, and any cleanup fees, and ask for references or photos of recent local jobs. Confirm timing, who will deliver the gravel, and whether the driver will attempt tailgate spreading (at their discretion).
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, and you can request spreading in the Order Notes at checkout, but Hello Gravel does not guarantee spreading services. The driver will assess access, safety, and material type on arrival and decide whether spreading is possible. For guaranteed spreading or grading, hire a contractor and schedule delivery to coordinate with the installer.
Gravel reflects local geology, so color, texture, and stone mix can vary across West North Carolina and from supplier to supplier in Hays. Weather (wet vs dry) also changes appearance, and photos are often idealized; if color matters, note preferences in your order or request a sample or photo of the actual load. Our listings note regional variation and you can contact customer service with concerns after delivery.
