Why Hodgkins Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Hodgkins has a city population of 21 and sits within a metro area with a population of 2.6+ million. The metro’s steady growth rate of 1.20% annually translates into ongoing residential and infrastructure activity, which drives consistent demand for bulk materials for landscaping, driveways, foundations, and new construction. With an annual rainfall of 35.50 inches and about 228 sunny days per year in hardiness zone 8b, homeowners face wet‑to‑dry cycles that make drainage, compaction stability, and weather resistance practical priorities. These combined trends mean homeowners need reliable access to a range of materials—graded aggregates, screened soils, mulch substitutes, and stabilized base mixes—sourced locally to reflect area geology and delivered on schedule to avoid project delays.Popular Projects in Hodgkins This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Hodgkins Gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Hodgkins.
Local projects commonly use a mix of bulk materials such as gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates. These materials are chosen for tasks like base layers, drainage, planting beds, backfill, and surface coverings for driveways and paths. Regional sourcing means texture and color can vary, so consider samples or photos when selecting.
Start by matching the material to the job: load‑bearing surfaces need compactable, angular aggregates; drainage applications need freely draining mixes; planting beds favor finer, looser materials. Think about appearance, compaction needs, drainage, and how the local freeze‑thaw cycle affects performance. Use a material calculator or contact our team for guidance if you are unsure.
Calculate volume by measuring area and desired depth, then convert cubic yards to tons using the material density or use our online calculator for a quick estimate. Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons, and we recommend ordering a small overage to allow for compaction and grading. If you need help, our team can run the numbers for your project.
Standard delivery is typically 2 or more business days, and next‑day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Materials are delivered by local contracted dump truck fleets (usually tri‑axle trucks), and free delivery is available in many areas depending on the zip code. Tailgate spreading can sometimes be performed at the driver's discretion if requested at checkout, but this is not guaranteed.
Yes—watch for narrow streets, low overhead lines, tight driveways, posted no‑parking zones, and construction or commercial traffic that can restrict truck access. Provide clear delivery instructions and photos during checkout to help drivers assess access and staging. If access is limited, consider a nearby drop zone or a smaller delivery window to reduce site disruption.
Permit requirements vary by project type; driveway alterations, curb cuts, or changes to impervious surface area may require permits from the village or county. Check Hodgkins municipal codes and contact the local building or public works department before starting work. If you need documentation for permitting, our team can help provide order and delivery details.
Late spring through early fall is generally best for installations because ground is drier and freeze‑thaw issues are minimal, but deliveries are possible year‑round. In winter, snow and frozen ground can affect spreading and compaction, and spring thaw can make sites muddy, so plan accordingly. If timing is critical, reserve materials in advance and monitor the weather forecast.
For drainage, choose mixes with good void space and coarse particles to let water pass through easily; for freeze‑thaw durability, well‑draining, angular aggregates that compact well tend to perform better. Avoid mixes that hold excess moisture in areas prone to prolonged freeze, and consider proper base preparation and grading to reduce frost heave. Regional sourcing can affect performance, so discuss local options with our team.
Typical recommendations are 4 to 6 inches of compacted base for pedestrian paths and 6 to 12 inches for driveways depending on expected vehicle traffic and soil conditions. Proper compaction, a well‑drained subgrade, and possibly a geotextile fabric help prevent settling and frost heave. Final top layer thickness will depend on the surface material chosen and project goals.
Turnaround times vary by supplier and season, but many local suppliers can deliver within a few business days; standard Hello Gravel delivery is 2+ business days. During busy seasons or for large orders, lead times may be longer, so book early for spring and summer projects. Contact our team for an estimated ETA for your zip code.
Low‑maintenance aggregates can be cost‑effective but may require periodic topping and occasional regrading, while more permanent hardscapes require higher upfront cost and less frequent upkeep. Consider how appearance, drainage, and durability align with your maintenance tolerance and neighborhood expectations to maximize curb appeal. Proper installation is often more important than material choice for long‑term performance and resale value.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos; if you have concerns, contact customer service promptly with photos and order details. Order changes are easier to accommodate before dispatch, so reach out as soon as possible; we will work with you and the supplier to find a solution. For disputed deliveries or quality issues, follow the instructions on our support pages and see our refund policy for details.
