Decomposed Granite
Known for its natural look, this compact, durable material drains well and holds up in high-traffic areas. Made from crushed and weathered granite down to a mix of fine gravel and sand—best for patios, paths, driveways, and landscape projects. Can range in color from light brown and tan to reddish and gray, depending on the natural stone color in the region.
Walkway Gravel
A smaller ⅜” crushed stone that is great for paths, patios, and garden walkways. Comfortable under foot thanks to its smaller size, and creates a beautiful garden-like atmosphere.
Road Base
(Class 5 | ABC | Crusher Run) A mixture of crushed limestone or granite, gravel, and sand, ranging from 1 ½” in size down to fines (small particles). Commonly used for constructing roads, driveway bases, parking lots, and other paved and unpaved surfaces. Intended to be compacted, hence the inclusion of fines within the material to provide support and be resistant to erosion and shifting.

Frequently Asked Questions - Montgomery County gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Montgomery County.
Prices vary by material and supplier, but in the Montgomery County area expect rough ranges of about $30 to $70 per ton. A good rule of thumb is 1 cubic yard of gravel weighs about 1.3 tons, so that works out to roughly $40 to $90 per cubic yard. Final price depends on gravel type, haul distance, minimum order size, and whether your property is rural or difficult to access — check your zip code for exact pricing and note Hello Gravel has a minimum 3-ton order.
Local suppliers commonly offer crushed stone #57, #411, pea gravel, river rock, and washed stone; regional color and texture will reflect Piedmont geology. For driveways, #57 or a combination of #411 (fines for locking) topped with #57 is recommended for compaction and traction; pea gravel and river rock work well for patios and decorative areas but are less stable for driveways. For drainage features use clean, washed stone (3/4" clear) or river rock sized for the flow — avoid fine materials that clog drains.
Montgomery County’s Piedmont soils often contain clay that drains slowly, so you typically need a thicker gravel base and attention to drainage. On clay or poor subgrade plan for geotextile fabric, a compacted subbase (crushed stone) and 4 to 6 inches of compacted wearing gravel for a residential driveway; steeper, rolling slopes may require deeper sections, retaining features, or terracing to prevent washouts. Proper compaction with a plate tamper or roller and good grading are critical on compactable or erodible slopes.
Hot, humid summers encourage vegetation growth between stones, while heavy seasonal rains can wash or rut gravel if drainage is poor. Occasional freezes can cause frost heave in poorly drained spots, so prioritize slope, gutters, and underdrainage. Expect more frequent maintenance after heavy storms and plan seasonal cleanups and spot regrading in spring and fall.
Costs vary by site prep, depth, and access, but ballpark figures for Montgomery County are about $800 to $2,500 for a basic 1-car driveway and $1,500 to $5,000 for a 2-car driveway. Lower-end prices assume minimal grading and good access; higher-end quotes include excavation, geotextile fabric, base stone, compaction, and hauling on difficult sites. Get written estimates from local contractors and confirm what each quote includes.
Yes — Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons and many suppliers have similar minimums. Rural deliveries can incur extra fees for long haul distances, narrow or steep driveways, or if the dump truck needs to use a smaller vehicle or perform difficult access maneuvers. You can see delivery availability and any extra charges when you enter your zip code at checkout or by contacting our team.
For French drains use 3/4" clean crushed stone with a typical trench depth of 12 to 18 inches and fabric to prevent clogging. Swales that carry occasional flow are often stabilized with 4 to 6 inches of angular crushed stone; for high-flow areas increase depth to 6 to 12 inches and use larger stone or check dams. For hillside erosion control, use larger crushed stone or riprap appropriate to slope and flow, combine with geotextile fabric and vegetation, and consult a local contractor for steep or high-volume sites.
Most homeowners in the Montgomery County region regrade or add gravel every 1 to 3 years, with heavier-use driveways needing attention more often. Typical annual maintenance costs range broadly from about $50 to $300 for small touch-ups and weed control; more extensive regrading or adding several tons could cost several hundred dollars. Maintenance frequency depends on drainage, traffic, slope, and storm exposure.
Rules vary by locality and subdivision: some Montgomery County parcels and municipal areas may have driveway permitting requirements, culvert standards, or erosion control rules for construction near roadways. Homeowners associations can also restrict surface materials or require architectural approval in certain subdivisions. Always check county permitting offices and your HOA covenants before installing a commercial-style gravel driveway or parking pad.
Look for local excavating, landscaping, and driveway contractors in Montgomery County; ask for references, before-and-after photos, and a written scope that includes grading, compaction, fabric, and stone depth. Expect contractors to price jobs based on square footage, depth, site prep, and haul time; full-service installs that include compaction and proper base work are more expensive but last longer. Hello Gravel supplies materials to many of these contractors and can help you estimate material quantities before you request bids.
