Why Detroit Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Detroit is a city of 402,670 residents at the center of a broader metro area of 2.5+ million, and its modest annual growth rate of 0.40% points to steady, incremental demand for home renovation and infill construction rather than a boom-and-bust cycle. In that context, homeowners are investing in durable, practical upgrades—driveways, yard renewals, garden beds, and site drainage—that all rely on reliable bulk materials. With 228 sunny days annually, 34.25 inches of rainfall per year, and a USDA hardiness zone of 8b, Detroit’s climate calls for materials that balance drainage and moisture retention. That means thoughtful selection across gravel, sand, soil blends, mulch, and stone so projects establish quickly and perform well through seasonal wet-dry cycles. Local sourcing matters here: regionally quarried and graded materials better match soil conditions and local contractors’ expectations, reducing surprises on delivery day and during installation.Popular Projects in Detroit This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Detroit Gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Detroit.
Start by matching performance needs to material characteristics: consider drainage, load-bearing, appearance, and maintenance. In Detroit's climate, prioritize materials that handle freeze-thaw cycles and road salt exposure; local suppliers typically offer a range of options including gravel, sand, dirt, and stone. Use our material calculator or contact our team for site-specific recommendations and realistic quantity estimates.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause settling and heaving, so choose materials with good drainage and compaction properties. Road salt can accelerate break-down of some materials and affect color/patina over time, and heavy rainfall increases erosion risk on slopes. Plan for proper base layers and drainage to extend lifespan regardless of material type.
Common projects include driveways, patios, walkways, raised beds, grading/fill, and base layers for pavers or concrete. Typical sizes vary: a small garden bed is a few cubic yards, a 1-car driveway often runs 10–20 cubic yards depending on depth, and a patio or driveway for larger jobs can be tens of cubic yards. Use area and depth estimates to get a tailored quantity for your project.
Measure the area in square feet and decide on the desired depth in feet, then use: cubic yards = (area in ft2 * depth in ft) / 27. Convert cubic yards to tons using a general range of 1.3–1.7 tons per cubic yard (varies by material) and add 10–20% for compaction and waste. Our online calculator can do these conversions for you automatically.
Standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days and a minimum order of 3 tons, while next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Lead times can lengthen in spring and fall busy seasons and may be limited in cold winter months. Material is delivered by contracted dump trucks (usually tri-axle); tailgate spreading is available at the driver's discretion and cannot be guaranteed.
We serve many Detroit ZIP codes; our primary service zip is 48201 and common delivery areas include 48226, 48208, 48202, 48216, 48243, 48207, 48233, 48211, 48212, 48275, 48279, 48278, 48222, 48244, 48206, 48231, 48232, 48277, 48269, and 48272. Availability can vary by material and supplier, so check your zip code on our site or contact our team to confirm service in your specific neighborhood.
Yes. Some neighborhoods or parcels have local requirements related to drainage, stormwater management, curb cuts, or fill that can affect what materials you can use and how they must be installed. Check Detroit building department rules, local permit requirements, and any HOA or deed restrictions before ordering large quantities. Your contractor or our sales team can help identify common local considerations for your project.
Lower-cost materials can work for short-term or light-use projects but often require more frequent replenishing and maintenance, while denser or angular materials typically perform better for driveways and high-traffic areas. Consider lifecycle cost: upfront price, maintenance frequency, and how the material performs in Detroit's climate. For high-use or load-bearing surfaces, prioritize stability and drainage over lowest price.
Expect communication confirming delivery details and a delivery window; drivers will typically use a tri-axle dump truck and will need safe access and space to deposit material. Remove obstacles, ensure vehicles are moved, and identify the preferred drop spot, keeping in mind drivers may need to avoid soft ground or overhead obstructions. Tailgate spreading may be requested at checkout but will be performed only if the driver deems it safe and feasible.
Contact our team as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; modifications are easier to accommodate before the supplier and truck are dispatched. Changes after dispatch depend on supplier and driver schedules and may not be possible, but we will make a best-effort attempt to help. See our order confirmation for contact info and timing guidelines.
Materials are sourced regionally, so color, texture, and particle shape can vary based on local geology and production methods. Natural variation is normal for gravel, sand, dirt, and stone; if color or consistency is important, note your preferences in Order Notes and consult our team before ordering. Photos are representative and not exact matches.
Clear the intended drop area of vehicles, toys, and obstacles and ensure a safe, level spot for the truck to operate; provide at least 10–12 feet of overhead clearance for most dump trucks. Mark boundaries or sensitive areas and identify utilities or sprinkler heads to avoid damage. If you are unsure about access or utility locations, discuss site prep with our team before delivery.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
