Why Skyland Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Skyland has a city population of 1,104 and is part of a growing West North Carolina region with a metro area population of 2.3+ million and a 2.80% annual growth rate. The local climate averages 228 sunny days per year, about 34.00 inches of rainfall annually, and lies in hardiness zone 8b — conditions that support both year-round landscaping and steady residential construction. That steady growth is driving demand for grading, driveway work, foundation backfill, and site prep from homeowners and small contractors. For many projects in Skyland, homeowners look for reliable, low-organic aggregates that compact well and provide predictable support for plants, hardscapes, and structures, which makes choosing the right fill material an important first step.Popular Projects in Skyland This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Skyland Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Skyland.
Prices vary by supplier, distance, and moisture, but expect delivered fill dirt in the West North Carolina area around Skyland to typically range from about $20 to $45 per cubic yard (roughly $15 to $35 per ton). Get an exact price by entering your zip code on Hello Gravel to see local supplier quotes and delivery fees. Remember minimum order sizes and truck access can affect the final price.
Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers that serve the Skyland area; enter your zip code to see available vendors and exact minimums. Our online checkout requires a 3-ton minimum, but many local haulers deliver full truckloads (tri-axle) of roughly 8 to 12 cubic yards, so remote or small-quantity deliveries may have higher minimums. If you need less than a truckload, ask suppliers about shared loads or smaller dump options when you request a quote.
Use this quick formula: cubic yards = (square feet x depth in inches) / 324. For example, raising a 1,000 sq ft lawn by 4 inches needs about 12.3 cubic yards (roughly 15 to 18 tons using a conversion of about 1.2 to 1.4 tons per cubic yard). A typical 12 ft x 50 ft driveway (600 sq ft) at 4 inches needs about 7.4 cubic yards (roughly 9 to 10 tons).
Because western North Carolina gets significant rain and has clay-rich pockets and freeze-thaw cycles, plain fill dirt can settle, hold water, and become unstable if not properly graded and compacted. For driveways and structural backfill, contractors often use a well-compacted base (crushed stone or engineered fill) and add fill dirt only where drainage and compaction are controlled. For slopes and erosion control, combine fill dirt with proper drainage, geotextiles, and vegetation to reduce runoff and slumping.
Requirements can vary by project and by local authority, so check Buncombe County building and permitting offices for exact rules in Skyland. For engineered or structural work (foundations, retaining walls, road approaches), contractors commonly require screened or clean fill and compaction testing, often targeting 90% to 95% of standard Proctor compaction. Septic systems and foundation backfill frequently have their own specifications, so confirm with your inspector or contractor before ordering.
Fill dirt is inexpensive and good for raising grade or filling holes, but it often has poor drainage and limited fertility for planting. Crushed stone provides structural support and drainage for driveways and base layers, making it better than fill dirt under traffic. Topsoil is needed on the surface where you want grass or gardens, and sand can improve drainage but may shift if used alone for structural fills.
Yes, contractors typically compact fill dirt in lifts using plate compactors, rammers for trenches, and rollers for larger areas; compacting between 6- to 8-inch lifts is common. For structural work they aim for roughly 90% to 95% of Standard Proctor density, while non-structural landscaping fills may be compacted to lower levels. Ask your contractor what compaction standard they will meet and whether they will provide testing documentation for permit work.
Hello Gravel offers standard delivery in 2+ business days with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, and you can request tailgate spreading at checkout (drivers do it at their discretion). Many local suppliers and independent haulers can provide spreading and light grading for an additional fee, and some subcontract compacting services for larger jobs. Always confirm available services, fees, and access requirements when you request your quote.
Clear the delivery area of vehicles, low branches, and obstacles; mark the preferred drop zone with flags or stakes and identify any underground utilities. Make sure trucks can access the site; if access is tight, let Hello Gravel know so we can match you with a supplier that can handle restricted drops. If you want spreading or compaction, note that on your order and confirm any extra charges with the supplier before delivery.
Yes — uncompacted fill dirt will settle, so plan on ordering roughly 10% to 20% extra to allow for settlement and compaction, depending on initial soil conditions and how it will be compacted. Wet or frozen conditions common in parts of western North Carolina can affect delivery and compaction, so discuss timing and moisture tolerances with the supplier. If your project is sensitive to settlement, request compacted or engineered fill and civil/soil-engineer guidance.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
