Why Highlands Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Highlands has a population of 3,030 and is part of a growing regional market whose metro area counts 2.3+ million residents and a steady annual growth rate of 2.80%. With 228 sunny days per year and 34.00 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, homeowners here balance long, sunny growing seasons with enough wet weather to influence grading and drainage decisions. That blend of climate and steady local development drives demand for reliable, locally sourced aggregates—especially fill dirt for raising grades, backfilling foundations, and stabilizing low spots. Homeowners value fill dirt that compacts predictably, resists erosion, and works with Highlands' existing soils to limit settling and maintenance over time. Fill dirt is a dense, low-organic material used to build up grades, support structures, and stabilize slopes. In Highlands' mix of sun and rain, locally sourced fill dirt helps improve drainage and reduce long-term settling when placed and compacted correctly. Hello Gravel connects Highlands homeowners with trusted local suppliers and professional dump-truck delivery, offering clear pricing, scheduling, and material guidance for orders starting at 3 tons. We coordinate deliveries on a 2+ business days schedule with next-day options available and can note tailgate spreading requests for drivers to evaluate on arrival, making it easier to get the right fill dirt where and when you need it.Popular Projects in Highlands This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Highlands Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Highlands.
Material prices for loose fill dirt around Highlands typically range from about $10 to $25 per ton (roughly $13 to $33 per cubic yard), but prices vary with moisture, particle size, and supplier. Delivery in mountain areas like Highlands can add a premium for longer haul distances and tight roads; expect additional delivery fees or minimums, and remember Hello Gravel's minimum order is 3 tons with standard 2+ business day delivery. For an exact quote, check your zip code on Hello Gravel or contact our team for local supplier pricing and delivery options.
Hello Gravel works with a network of local suppliers and haulers that serve West North Carolina, including vendors that deliver to Highlands and Macon County. Availability changes by zip code and road access, so enter your address on Hello Gravel or call our team to see which specific local suppliers will deliver to your property. If a site has particularly narrow or steep access, let us know up front so we can match a hauler with the right equipment.
Use this quick rule: 1 cubic yard covers about 81 sq ft at 4 inches depth, and 1 cubic yard of typical fill dirt weighs roughly 1.2 to 1.3 tons. Example estimates: a 12x100 ft driveway base at 4 inches needs ~14.8 cu yd (about 18 to 20 tons); a 10x12 ft patio base at 4 inches needs ~1.23 cu yd (about 1.5 to 2 tons); backfilling a small foundation (20x30 ft by 2 ft) is roughly 44 cu yd (about 53 to 58 tons). Always order a little extra (5-10%) to allow for compaction and grading.
Yes. Highlands sees frequent rain and freeze-thaw cycles that increase settling and the risk of erosion if fill is not properly placed. In this climate, contractors typically place fill in thin lifts and mechanically compact each layer, and they prioritize drainage (swales, French drains) and erosion control to reduce future settling. Ask your supplier for well-draining, low-organic fill and plan for aggressive compaction and surface grade control.
Local contractor rates vary with job size, access, and slope, but a common range for placement and compaction is about $15 to $40 per cubic yard in this region when including labor and equipment; small jobs or steep sites can push prices higher. Some contractors charge hourly rates instead, typically $75 to $150 per hour for equipment and operator combined. For accurate bids, ask contractors for an itemized price that separates material, delivery, and placement/compaction.
Fill dirt is dense and good for building grade and supporting structures, but it has poor drainage compared with crushed stone and often lacks the rootable material of topsoil. For erosion control on steep slopes, crushed stone or rock with proper drainage, retaining features, or vegetated topsoil cover is usually more effective; fill dirt alone can wash if not stabilized. On steep sites, contractors often use geotextile, terracing, rock riprap, or a stone drainage layer below fill dirt to improve stability.
Permit requirements depend on the scope of work. Small leveling or garden fills are often permitted without formal review, but substantial grading, fills near waterways, or work that affects stormwater may require town or Macon County permits and erosion-control plans. For septic access pads, the county health department and local building officials should be consulted, and Hello Gravel recommends checking with Highlands Town Hall and Macon County Planning before starting any major grading or fill project.
For foundation backfill, ask for 'clean' or 'structural' fill with low organic content, minimal root material, and no large debris or trash. Request information on gradation (sieve) and compaction recommendations; engineers commonly call for staged lifts compacted to a specified density (often 90% to 95% of Standard/Modified Proctor depending on the project). If your project is structural, confirm with your engineer whether they require laboratory testing or certified compaction reports from the contractor.
Many local suppliers and haulers serving the Highlands area can offer small-load deliveries, but options depend on road access and the supplier's minimums. Hello Gravel's platform lists the minimum order (typically 3 tons) and will show if smaller loads, yardage deliveries, or bagged fill are available in your zip code. If you need less than the minimum, contact our team and we can often recommend a nearby supplier that accommodates smaller residential deliveries.
Expect some settling during the first season, especially with heavy rain; plan to add a small top-up (often 1 to 3 inches) within the first year. Small regrading or touch-up jobs for driveways, pads, or low spots commonly cost a few hundred dollars for residential properties, while larger regrades are priced by the cubic yard or equipment hour. Minimizing future maintenance means compacting in lifts at installation, installing proper drainage, and using vegetation or hardscape to protect exposed fill.
