Why Big Flats Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Big Flats is a small, steadily growing community of 1,860 residents situated within a broader metro area population of 2.3+ million. With a measured growth rate of 0.40% annually, demand for construction and landscaping materials tends to be steady and project-focused rather than boom-driven: homeowners prioritize practical repairs, driveway and patio upgrades, drainage fixes, and garden improvements that rely on predictable quantities of bulk materials. The local climate — about 228 sunny days each year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall, in USDA hardiness zone 8b — means projects must balance sunlight exposure with periodic moisture. That mix creates a need for a range of materials: base aggregates and sands for drainage and compaction, quality topsoil and amended soils for planting beds, mulch and organic products for moisture retention, and erosion-control supplies for sloped sites. Sourcing regionally appropriate materials helps match color, texture, and performance to local soils and weather patterns, reducing rework and increasing longevity of outdoor projects.Popular Projects in Big Flats This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Big Flats Gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Big Flats.
Start by thinking about traffic, drainage, and the finish you want. For load-bearing areas choose compactable, well-draining materials; for decorative beds pick materials with the look and texture you prefer. Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, gravel, sand, dirt, stone and mixes will reflect local geology, so use our material quiz or contact our team for a recommendation.
Big Flats has cold winters and freeze-thaw cycles, so avoid final surfacing or fine grading right before deep freezes or during spring thaw. Ordering in late spring through early fall gives more predictable installation conditions and easier truck access. If you must work in winter, choose materials and installation methods suited to freezing temperatures and plan potential delays.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days; next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Hello Gravel uses local suppliers and contracted dump trucks (usually tri-axle) with a 3-ton minimum order. You can choose a delivery date at checkout and request tailgate spreading, which drivers may perform at their discretion.
Provide a clear drop zone free of overhead wires, low branches, parked cars, or narrow gates, and keep a solid surface for the truck to park when possible. Mark utilities and remove obstacles so drivers can safely dump where you need material. If access is limited or the truck must stop on a public road, notify the delivery team in advance to discuss options and possible extra charges.
Typical volumes vary by project: small garden beds can be 1-3 cubic yards, a 10x10 patio often needs 1-2 cubic yards, and a 12x50 driveway at 4 inches deep is roughly 7-8 cubic yards (about 9-12 tons depending on material). Because weight and density vary by material, use our online material calculator or contact us with project dimensions for a precise estimate. We recommend ordering a bit extra (5-10%) to allow for compaction and grading.
Costs depend on material type, seasonal demand, and haul distance; common aggregates often fall into broad per-ton ranges and delivery fees vary by supplier. Delivery is free in many areas but when charged can range from modest local fees up to higher costs for long hauls or tricky access. For exact pricing enter your zip code on our site or contact our team for a tailored quote.
Materials that drain well and compact into a stable base generally perform best through freeze-thaw cycles, so durable crushed stone mixes or angular aggregates are commonly used as bases beneath surfaces. Fine sands and loose topsoil can shift more in freeze-thaw conditions, so pair them with a proper base and good drainage. Selecting layered systems (base, binder, surface) helps longevity in cold climates.
Permits depend on the work: new driveway curb cuts, changes affecting stormwater, or large grading projects often require local town or county permits. Material delivery itself usually does not require a permit unless trucks will block public rights-of-way. Check with the Big Flats town office or Chemung County building department early in planning to avoid delays.
Compare cost, drainage, maintenance, and appearance: cheaper, finer materials may need more upkeep and handle water poorly, while coarser, angular materials typically drain better and last longer but cost more upfront. Also consider installation effort—some materials require compaction or geotextile underlay to perform well. Discuss project priorities (budget, longevity, look) with suppliers to find the right balance.
Because Hello Gravel sources materials locally, color, texture and gradation can vary from photos or samples. If the material differs significantly from your order, contact customer service promptly so we can review the order and work with the supplier to address concerns. Include photos and delivery details to help speed resolution.
Contact our team as soon as possible; changes are easiest before the order enters processing and before trucks are dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but modifications or cancellations may be limited once the supplier and hauler are scheduled. Check your order confirmation for contact info and timing guidelines.
Clear a path and designate a safe drop zone, mark utilities, and ensure there is room for the dump truck to maneuver and park. If you need tailgate spreading, request it at checkout and note that drivers will assess safety when they arrive. Communicate any access constraints in the order notes so the supplier can plan the appropriate truck and crew.
As of today, we require 2 business days for delivery.
