Why Washington Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Washington has a city population of 22,450 and sits within a rapidly growing regional market—its metro area counts 2.3+ million people with an annual growth rate of 2.80%. With 228 sunny days per year and an annual rainfall of 34.00 inches, local yards and building sites experience both extended dry spells and seasonal wet periods. In hardiness zone 8b, landscaping and new construction are active, and that steady growth drives demand for earthwork and aggregate deliveries. Homeowners looking to grade yards, raise low spots, or prepare bases for patios and driveways turn to Fill Dirt because it provides stable, compactable material that helps prevent future settling and surface drainage problems.Popular Projects in Washington This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Washington Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Washington.
Delivery cost varies by supplier, distance, and order size, but in the Washington, NC area you can typically expect delivery fees to be low or included for short hauls. Hello Gravel’s platform shows upfront pricing once you enter your zip code; minimum orders start at 3 tons and standard delivery is 2+ business days with a next-day option for an extra fee. Request a quote in checkout to see delivered price for your exact address.
Prices vary with local supply and material quality, but in West North Carolina fill dirt commonly runs about $10 to $25 per cubic yard, roughly $12 to $30 per ton delivered. That range depends on moisture content, truck access, and whether the material is screened or contains organic matter. Use Hello Gravel’s quote tool for a precise local price.
Calculate cubic yards with: (area in ft^2 x depth in ft) / 27. For 6 inches (0.5 ft): a 5,000 ft^2 yard needs about 93 cubic yards (roughly 110 to 115 tons), a 10,000 ft^2 yard needs about 185 cubic yards (about 220 to 235 tons), and a 20,000 ft^2 area needs about 370 cubic yards (about 440 to 480 tons), depending on moisture and compaction. Always order 5-10% extra to allow for settling and grade adjustments.
Yes, there are local haulers and landscaping contractors in the Washington area who deliver and can spread fill dirt. Hello Gravel coordinates local suppliers and dump-truck delivery; tailgate spreading may be available but is at the driver’s discretion. Independent contractors typically charge either a flat truck-spread fee or $50 to $150 per hour for labor and equipment, so get written estimates and confirm what is included.
Fill dirt is useful for raising grade, backfilling, and basic landscaping in Washington’s humid subtropical and mostly flat coastal terrain, but it is not the best material for erosion-prone slopes or as a final surfacing. Because the area gets heavy summer rain and occasional storms, compacting the fill, protecting slopes with vegetation or erosion control fabric, and using drainage features are important. For shoreline, wetlands, or steep banks, consult local regulators and consider engineered fill or erosion control products.
You may need permits depending on where you place the material and whether the work affects wetlands, floodplains, stormwater, or public right-of-way. Check with the City of Washington Planning and Zoning and Beaufort County offices, and if your project touches wetlands or coastal areas contact the NC Department of Environmental Quality. For large commercial or shoreline projects, get guidance from local officials before delivery.
Compacted fill dirt can provide temporary support but generally does not perform as well as crushed stone for driveways, especially under vehicles and in wet conditions common in eastern North Carolina. Crushed stone and gravel create a stable, draining base that resists rutting; fill dirt tends to retain moisture and settle, which can lead to uneven surfaces. For long-lasting driveways in Washington, use fill dirt only for minor grade work and place a well-graded stone base for the driving surface.
Expect some settling in the first year as the soil consolidates; plan to regrade or add material to low spots. For backfill and landscape pads, proper compaction and drainage extend performance, but fill dirt may need topping with topsoil for planting. For driveways and high-traffic areas, fill dirt alone will require more frequent maintenance than compacted stone and may last poorly under repeated loads.
Yes. Washington sees heavy summer storms and a hurricane season that can delay deliveries and make sites muddy, so schedule deliveries during drier periods when possible. Wet weather reduces compaction effectiveness and increases the chance of ruts; avoid spreading when the ground is saturated. Also plan around any local stormwater or erosion-control requirements that are stricter during rainy months.
Ask suppliers for 'clean fill' or 'structural fill' that is free of trash, large organic debris, and known contaminants. Request information on material origin, whether it contains topsoil or organics, and a delivery ticket describing material type; for sensitive sites ask about lab testing for contaminants. Hello Gravel connects you with local suppliers in the Washington area and can help you request photos and material details before ordering.
