Why Star Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Star is a growing community of 2,330 residents in West North Carolina. With a steady annual growth rate of 2.80%, local development—new homes, driveways, and yard renovations—is increasing demand for reliable bulk materials. Star's climate records 228 sunny days per year and about 34.00 inches of rain annually and sits in hardiness zone 8b, so soils experience cycles of wetting and drying that can lead to settling or erosion if grades aren’t built correctly. Homeowners and contractors turn to quality aggregates to stabilize grades, raise low spots, and create consistent basements and pad areas. Fill dirt is a foundational material for those needs because it offers predictable compaction and price-efficient volume for large earthwork tasks.Popular Projects in Star This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Star Fill Dirt Delivery
Everything you need to know about fill dirt delivery in Star.
Delivered fill dirt in the Star area typically runs in a wide range because of supplier, distance, and material quality. Expect roughly $12 to $30 per ton, which equates to about $10 to $25 per cubic yard using a common conversion (see note below). Final price depends on haul distance, site access, moisture content, and whether you need spreading or special placement.
For raising grades and backfill, use low-organic, screened fill dirt or select subsoil with minimal topsoil and roots; these materials consolidate and compact more reliably than topsoil. For structural pads and driveways you should place and compact fill dirt as subgrade but finish with a structural base (crushed stone or quarry process) rather than leaving fill dirt exposed.
Star and West North Carolina experience seasonal freeze-thaw and often clayey subsoils, so poor drainage and frost heave can be issues if fill dirt is not installed properly. Achieve good performance by using well-draining lifts, proper compaction, positive surface drainage, and a granular layer under any paved surfaces to reduce freeze-thaw movement.
No, fill dirt is not intended as a finished surface—it compacts and can rut or wash away when driven on. Use compacted fill dirt only as a subgrade; top it with a structural layer such as crushed stone, quarry process, or an engineered base to create a stable, long-lasting driving surface.
Measure the area in feet (length x width x depth in feet) and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For weight planning, use a practical conversion of about 1.1 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard for typical fill dirt in West NC—actual weight varies with moisture and compaction, so order a little extra (5-10%). You can also use Hello Gravel’s online calculator or contact our team for a quick estimate.
Hello Gravel’s typical deliveries use tri-axle dump trucks, which commonly hold about 10–14 cubic yards and often 12–16 tons depending on material, though smaller pup trucks or end-dumps may be used for tight sites. Our minimum order is 3 tons, standard delivery lead time is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion; request it at checkout but understand it is not guaranteed.
Small residential deliveries and minor grade adjustments typically do not require a permit, but larger fills, significant grade changes, work near streams, wetlands, septic systems, or within HOA restrictions may require town or county permits and inspections. Check with Star’s town office and Davidson/neighboring county planning or permitting departments before Starting large imports, and confirm septic setbacks and floodplain rules if applicable.
Place fill dirt in thin lifts (generally 6–12 inches), moisten as needed, and compact each lift with a plate compactor or roller to achieve stable density. Keep organic topsoil and vegetation removed from the placement area, maintain positive surface drainage, and consider geotextile fabric or a granular separation layer where soft soils exist to prevent mixing and settlement.
Fill dirt is usually the least expensive material per ton and is cost-effective for raising grade or filling low spots, but it is not a structural surface and can result in more maintenance if used where stone should be. Crushed stone or quarry process costs more up front but provides better drainage, load-bearing capacity, and lower long-term maintenance for driveways and parking pads, making it the better value for traffic-bearing surfaces.
Provide a precise delivery address, clear drop location with room for a tri-axle truck to turn and dump, gate or driveway height and width, and contact phone number for the driver. Note any access restrictions, requested delivery date, whether you want tailgate spreading (driver discretion), and any permit or HOA requirements so the supplier can plan appropriately.
