Driveway Gravel Preparation Guide
Preparing Your Driveway for Driveway Gravel from Scratch
Step 1: Plan and Measure Your Driveway
- Determine the Area: Mark the boundaries of your driveway using stakes and string. Make sure to plan for any curves or additional space for parking.
- Calculate the Gravel Needed: Measure the length, width, and depth of your driveway to estimate the amount of gravel required. A typical gravel driveway should have two layers, with each layer being about 3-4 inches deep.
- Utilize our calculator below to determine how much material you need for each step.
Step 2: Excavate the Driveway Area
- Clear the Area: Remove any grass, plants, roots, or debris from the driveway area.
- Excavate the Soil: Dig down to a depth of about 6-8 inches, depending on the thickness of the gravel layers you plan to install. This will allow room for a solid base and the gravel layers.
- Create a Slope: Ensure the driveway has a slight slope to allow water drainage, preventing puddling and erosion.
Step 3: Install a Base Layer
- (Optional) Lay Geotextile Fabric: Place a geotextile fabric over the excavated area to prevent weed growth and soil erosion, while allowing water to pass through.
- Add the Base Layer: Spread a 3-4 inch layer of crushed stone (often called the sub-base) evenly over the fabric. Compact this layer using a plate compactor to create a stable foundation.

- Rake and Smooth: Use a rake to smooth the surface and ensure an even spread of gravel.
- Edge the Driveway: Consider adding edging materials like bricks, wood, or larger stones to keep the gravel contained and prevent it from spreading into your yard.
- Regular Maintenance: Plan to regularly rake the gravel and fill in any low spots to maintain a smooth surface.
Preparing Your Driveway if It Is a Refresh
Step 1: Evaluate the Current Condition
- Inspect the Driveway: Walk around your driveway and look for potholes, ruts, or areas where the gravel has become thin or compacted.
- Check for Drainage Issues: Identify any areas where water tends to pool, as this could indicate poor drainage or a need for additional grading.
Step 2: Repair and Regrade
- Fill Potholes and Ruts: Use a shovel to remove any existing gravel from the affected areas. Fill the holes with fresh crushed stone or gravel, then compact it with a tamper or plate compactor.
- Regrade for Drainage: If necessary, regrade your driveway to ensure proper water drainage. Use a rake or shovel to redistribute the gravel and create a slight slope.
Step 3: Add New Gravel
- Spread Fresh Gravel: Add a new layer of gravel over the entire driveway, focusing on areas that have become thin or compacted. A 2-3 inch layer of fresh gravel is usually sufficient for a refresh.

- Edge the Driveway: If the edges of your driveway have become undefined, consider adding or replacing edging materials to keep the gravel contained.
- Maintenance: Continue with regular maintenance, including raking and adding new gravel as needed to keep your driveway in top condition.
